“Late in the afternoon the twelve disciples came to him and said, “Send the crowds away to the nearby villages and farms, so they can find food and lodging for the night. There is nothing to eat here in this remote place.” But Jesus said, “You feed them.” “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Or are you expecting us to go and buy enough food for this whole crowd?” For there were about 5,000 men there.” Luke 9:12-14 NLT
I’ve often heard people use the phrase, ‘God won’t give you more than you can handle,’ which is actually not strictly true! It’s often a misquote of a verse about temptation from 1 Corinthians 10:13. But just like in this account from Luke, God will give us more than we can handle, because He wants us to learn to trust in Him, to work with Him. Self-sufficiency is no substitute for God-sufficiency! Life works better when when we depend on Jesus. What must have those disciples thought when Jesus told them to feed the thousands? What they had just didn’t look enough and yet when they brought it to Jesus and did what He commanded, it was more than enough! Lord, I hear myself uttering the same ‘but…’ responses of the disciples. Your expectations of me seem way beyond my abilities, and yet I trust in You. Please use the little I think I have this week to do something amazing with as I follow Your directions. Amen 👆🏼😊
