What Is Prayer and Why Does It Matter? Prayer is not a religious ritual. It is direct communication with the living God. The Bible defines it simply: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6). Prayer is the channel through which heaven meets earth, and through which God’s will is released in your daily life.
At Kingfisher Church Tredworth, we believe prayer is not reserved for Sundays or emergencies. It is the daily breath of the believer.
How Did Jesus Pray? The Model We Follow
The clearest template for effective prayer comes from Jesus Himself. When His disciples asked “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1), He did not give them theology. He gave them a pattern.
The Lord’s Prayer breaks down into six movements:
- Worship first. “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (Matthew 6:9). Begin with who God is, not what you need.
- Alignment. “Your kingdom come, your will be done” (Matthew 6:10). Surrender your agenda to His.
- Daily dependence. “Give us today our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). Ask specifically, trust daily.
- Forgiveness. “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven” (Matthew 6:12). Clear the conscience before pressing forward.
- Protection. “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:13). Ask for covering.
- Praise. Return to worship. End where you began.
Jesus also modelled early morning prayer: “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (Mark 1:35). If the Son of God prioritised it, so should we.
What Makes Prayer Effective?
Does God Always Answer Prayer?
Yes, though not always in the way or timing we expect. Scripture is clear: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). The condition is persistence and faith, not perfection.
What Blocks Effective Prayer?
Three things consistently hinder prayer according to Scripture.
Unbelief. “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind” (James 1:6).
Unforgiveness. “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins” (Mark 11:25).
Wrong motives. “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives” (James 4:3). Prayer is not a vending machine. It is a relationship.
How Do I Pray When I Don’t Know What to Say?
The Holy Spirit carries you when words fail. “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans” (Romans 8:26). On your hardest days, simply being still before God is enough.
Five Scriptures to Pray Daily
These are not suggestions. They are weapons.
- “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13)
- “No weapon formed against me shall prosper” (Isaiah 54:17)
- “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1)
- “By His wounds I am healed” (Isaiah 53:5)
- “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7)
Speak these aloud. Faith comes by hearing, including hearing yourself declare God’s Word (Romans 10:17).
