“Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become restless and disturbed within me? Hope in God and wait expectantly for Him, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence. O my God, my soul is in despair within me [the burden more than I can bear]; Therefore I will [fervently] remember You…” Psalms 42:5-6 AMP
The word ‘despair’ comes from the Latin word desparer (without hope). How do we end up without hope, restless and disturbed within? It’s often when I forget God, when all I can see is darkness and all I can feel is heaviness, when my focus is on the obstacles in front of me rather than the One who IS with me. But as Christians we are not without hope, for we’re not without God! Jesus promises to give us rest as we come to Him. Remembering His promises, remembering what He has done before, remembering the benefits of being His, of my past forgiven, my future secure, and the help of His presence here in my present, renews hope within me! So, Lord, today, I choose to fervently remember You and to put my hope in You!
For anyone who is experiencing any despair today, “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 NLT
