Words are powerful things. They can be used for great good and, conversely, for great evil. As the Bible puts it, ”Death and life are in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat its fruits.” (Proverbs 18:21, ESV). If words are that powerful – they literally convey death and life – then it stands to reason that we need to choose what we say carefully and what we say comes from what we believe. No wonder the Bible tells us: “Fix your thoughts on what is true and honourable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” (Philippians 4:8)
There is great power in aligning what we say with the truth of the Bible – what it says about us, about the situations we face, about the character and heart of God. Aligning what we say; bringing our words into agreement with the word of God is what confession is all about. As we come into agreement with God’s word and speak it out, our minds begin to change from defeat to faith. The power of God is unleashed into the situations that we face.
Confessing – coming into agreement with what God says about us and our situation – is not an attempt to manipulate God into giving us what we want. It is coming to see things from God’s perspective, allowing his truth to form our beliefs, shape our words, change our lives. You are who God says you are! You can achieve everything God says you can achieve! Start confessing the truth, rather than just accepting the limitations and barriers that are before you. No weapon formed against you will prosper!
